“Solarisation” or “Sabatier effect” when referring to negatives, is a method in photography in which the image recorded on a negative or on a photographic print is wholly or partially reversed in tone. Dark areas appear light or light areas appear dark.
Solarised nudes of Marcel Bovis, especially with respect to their setting, seem to depict casual moments of the same model. An ordinary act of sleeping or standing, without concern about the pose actually turns into a characteristic Bovis approach on the nude. While the solarisation affect seems to be the negative of an analog photograph, the photographed body is actually also negated beauty-wise. This is because all the roughness of a body, and the time on is made to become very visible to the eyes. So the expectation from a nude model is also put under question in Bovis’s nudes.
