In this photograph Bourdin captures the notion that sexual tension can be so concentrated in the nipples that the fingers are able to direct the sexual desire of the entire body much like a conductor directs a musical piece.
Bourdin’s use of a woman’s hand suggests that a woman’s fingers know best what another woman’s body desires. Thus the two fingers do not hold the nipples per se, but the sexual tension in the nipples. Therefore the desire, arousal, orgasm and resolution are all embedded in this gentle hold. Showing the stimulation of the breast, this prominent indicator of female sexual arousal is erotically enflaming. In fact, it initiates and enhances the arousal.
This image demonstrates Bourdin’s ability to weave intricate stories into his nudes, arresting the viewer’s attention by his use of the indiscreet, the fragmentary and the absent.
